Downsides of the iPod
The iPod is not compatible with Window Media files. These are the preferred format for many music sites other then Itunes. For example, Amazon Unbox, which sells movie and television shows downloads, will not work on the iPod. If you want to buy digital content you are locked into Itunes, which limits your options greatly.
Also, the iPod is more expensive then other MP3 players of similar storage size. When you are buying an iPod much of the price is the cache of the name. You can get cheap MP3 player with the same features and quality for less money. On the other hand, many MP3 accessories are specially designed for the iPod because it is the most popular brand. If you get a lesser known brand it may be harder to find products that are compatible with them.
Don't just buy the iPod without doing research into the other players on the market to see if they can better fit your needs.

You're right that the iPod is well known and popular because of Apple's excellent marketing. They know how to market their products.
The iPod not being compatible with all formats does make it difficult when you come across some music or video but can't use it on the iPod. You then, as you mentioned have to find it elsewhere.
It's always good to look at all your options and understand what your device will do and what it won't do.
I think the iPod is brilliant, but the major downside is the internal battery - you cant swap and change them, so it must be recharged before further use. I guess its possible to arrange for external packs, but i think that maybe the chance to change batteries would be good.
I agree with Drew888 though :)
You really are paying for a name, but as you say, there are so many good accessories that can transform your ipod, that I think it's probably worth the extra expense. I've never bother really looking into any other kinds of MP3, but as I'm thinking of purchasing a new one with larger memory, perhaps i will now.
